Le nom, assez rare, est porté dans le département du Nord et en Belgique (Harrigar en 1622, Hariga en 1765 à Montegnée). Selon le Dictionnaire des noms de famille en Belgique romane, c'est une adaptation du nom de personne d'origine germanique Hartgar, porté par un évêque de Liège au IXe siècle (hard = dur + gari = lance).
